FROM THE GAP

Why Kanopi Gap?

Our name comes from a common rhythm found in nature

When a tree falls in a forest, something remarkable happens.

Sunlight reaches the ground for the first time in years. Seeds lying dormant begin to grow. New species emerge. The forest doesn’t weaken. It adapts, reorganizes, and becomes more diverse, more resilient, and more alive than before.

Ecologists call this a canopy gap.

We built our design practice around that idea.

Kanopi Gap began with a belief that meaningful change doesn’t always require starting over. Often, the potential is already there—in the landscape, the community, the ecology, or the relationships that define a place. What’s needed is an opening.

Our role as designers is to find those openings.

That means listening before drawing. Understanding the systems already at work. Asking where thoughtful intervention can create new connections, reveal overlooked potential, or give something dormant the opportunity to grow.

Because every landscape, neighborhood, district, and city is a living system. Each has its own history, dynamics, relationships, and possibilities. We don’t want to overwrite those systems with predetermined answers. We want to work with them.

Sometimes that means a bold move. Sometimes it means a small one in exactly the right place.

That is the idea behind Kanopi Gap—and the practice we are building around it.

A small opening can transform an entire system.
