Small openings can transform entire systems.
Hello, we're Kanopi Gap.
We co-create the conditions for landscapes, communities, and cities to grow stronger over time. In practice, we design parks and open spaces, plan campuses and districts, and help clients decide what to build, where, and why before major decisions are set.
Our studio is in Midtown St. Louis. We begin by listening to the people who know the place, studying the history and conditions that shape it, and identifying the constraints and opportunities that should guide the work. We turn that understanding into a clear direction and carry it from early strategy through design and implementation.
DISCIPLINES
We work across landscape architecture, urban design, and planning.

origin story
In forest ecology, a canopy gap forms when an established tree falls. What follows is not loss—it is reorganization. Seeds that have waited years for light suddenly have their conditions. New life takes root and the forest becomes more complex, more diverse, more resilient than it was before.
We built a practice around finding those openings. Not imposing solutions. Not applying predetermined answers. Finding the gap—the precise point where intervention creates the conditions for something better to emerge.
Living systems have their own logic. We work with it. Landscapes, cities, and districts behave like complex adaptive systems—and we engage them that way. Not as metaphor. As method.
Small openings can transform entire systems.
