J. Andrew Kilmer
PLA, ASLA
Managing Principal
Andrew is an award-winning landscape architect, design leader, and problem solver with a deep appreciation for land, place, and the systems that shape them. He believes the most meaningful solutions begin with understanding what makes a place unique, asking the right questions, and recognizing the opportunities already present within it. His approach combines creative thinking with a practical understanding of implementation, helping clients and design teams navigate complex challenges while carrying strong ideas from initial vision through construction.
As Managing Principal of Kanopi Gap, Andrew leads the firm’s strategic design practice with a focus on great work, strong relationships, and meaningful collaboration. Throughout his career, he has led landscape architecture, planning, and urban design efforts across public realm, higher education, healthcare, civic and cultural, mixed-use, and corporate environments. Working closely with clients and multidisciplinary teams, Andrew looks for the strategic opportunities—the small openings—that can unlock larger possibilities for a project, landscape, or community.
Andrew brings a hands-on perspective to design leadership and remains engaged throughout the life of a project. He believes successful design requires both ambition and discipline: protecting the strength of an idea, solving problems collaboratively, understanding how places are made, and ensuring that design intent is realized in the built work.
Andrew earned his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Kansas State University in 2001 and later pursued graduate studies in Urban Planning and Real Estate Development at Saint Louis University. He serves on the Dean’s Advisory Council for the College of Architecture, Planning & Design at Kansas State University and is an active member of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
