The Harris-Stowe STEM Building is designed for how science actually gets taught and practiced today — in flexible, collaborative environments where disciplines overlap, students work visibly, and the boundary between classroom and corridor is deliberately blurred.
At the core of the building is a transparent circulation spine that makes learning visible from the moment you enter. Labs, classrooms, collaboration spaces, and student amenities are organized around this spine to encourage movement, encounter, and connection across disciplines. The building is built on a “long life, loose fit” principle — designed to remain relevant as academic programs, pedagogies, and technologies evolve.

The siting carries its own significance. The building completes the southwest edge of Harris-Stowe’s campus quadrangle — a gap that has left the campus feeling incomplete and physically disconnected from the surrounding neighborhood. Indoor and outdoor spaces are integrated along the building’s edges, creating welcoming gathering areas that strengthen the relationship between campus and Midtown.
The project also acknowledges the deeper history of the site. Located within the footprint of the former Mill Creek Valley — a neighborhood displaced by urban renewal in the late 1950s — the STEM Building is part of the ongoing repair of that rupture. Its alignment with the future Brickline Greenway reinforces that connection, positioning Harris-Stowe as a gateway between campus and city.
